A lot of students told us that:
Thatâs great news!
âWhen I walk into the classroom, I feel supportedâ
âThey knew I wanted to learn⌠I felt welcome and I felt safeâ
âI have been to a lot of schools, and I find⌠teachers and staff are the best I have come across in a long time.â
Most of the time, students liked their relationships with teachersâ. Â
âThe teachers understand how people are feeling, helping us to understand the things that we obviously not been taught and help us with our confidence.âÂ
"Teachers let you be yourself and have a voice about the work I do"âŻÂ Â
âMy teachers care about me and they care about my learning.âÂ
âTeachers make this school more better and easier each dayâÂ
Heaps of students felt really good about the things they were learning while theyâre in residence. Students liked learning things that will be useful, like first aid and cooking and growing food.âŻThey were very proud of their hard work and the NCEA credits and qualifications they got.
â[I got] a lot of certificates ⌠very proud of them. Before I came here, I didnât know what credits were.ââŻÂ
â[This residence] got me back to year levels where I need to be.â
The Education Review Office also found out that when students do credits in residences, they have high pass rates.
Some students told us that they felt connected to their culture. They told us about mihi whakatau, cultural weeks and going to marae. They said that the residence helped them to feel proud about being MÄori and feel like they belong.Â
âI feel I have enough opportunities to learn about my culture. I would like to be able to understand more te reo MÄori.â Â
âBeing MÄori here ⌠[I] feel proud ⌠now know about 100 times more about my culture.ââŻÂ

"Sometimes we don't get choice about what we learn but most of the time we can choose what we want to learn or do"âŻÂ
Students told us things work best when they have a say in what they learn, and how they learn it.Â
Some students thought that teachers should talk to their families more.Â
â[There] was no discussion about what my family wanted for me or their skills or valued activities when cameâŻhere.â
âMy family is not big on education.âÂ
âI think our family should receive a report of how we are achieving. I want to make my mum proud. Isnât it every familyâs main priority to see how their kid is doing?âÂ
